The French is a complex opening and can lead to a wide variety of middlegames. The Winawer after 3...Bb4 is Black’s most proactive option, immediately weakening White’s pawn structure by doubling their c-pawns.
As Black capitalizes on targeting the vulnerable d4 square, White frequently seizes attacking opportunities on the kingside and secures a spatial advantage. Structurally, this line may result in closed positions following ...c4 or lead to an open and dynamic play with White's structural exchange via dxc5.
