The Grunfeld Defense has always been a popular choice with players who aim to counterattack with the black pieces. It is one of the most aggressive openings for Black against White’s first move 1.d4, arising after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5.

You will have a very powerful and attacking system against 1.d4 by White. Some lines are complicated; however, the similarity between the different lines makes it easier for you to start implementing this new opening system in your games.

Igor Smirnov is a chess Grandmaster, coach, and holder of a Master’s degree in psychology. GM Alex Ipatov
Alex Ipatov was born in the Ukraine and is aged 23 now. He is a very young Grandmaster (got the GM title at age 17) and is the number 1 player in Turkey (and number 89 in the world) as of October, 2016. He is a two-time Turkish National Champion and has a FIDE rating of 2662.
