According to legend, King Arthur was the son of Uther. After Uther's death there was no king ruling all England. A sword had been placed in a stone by Merlin, saying that whoever drew it out would be king. Arthur did so and got himself crowned.
He married the fair Guinevere whose father gave him the Round Table as a dowry; it became the place where his knights sat, to avoid quarrels over precedence. Arthur's court yielded many heroes. His most illustrious knight, was Lancelot.
